Marching Workshop Successfully Held!

"Connecting and Learning Together" – Our New Marching Workshop!

The JMBA Kanto Branch hosted a two-part "Marching Workshop" on Sunday, May 24, and Sunday, June 28, 2026. Carrying on the legacy of the former "Introductory Instructor Course," this marked the Kanto Branch's first workshop in seven years. Thanks to the enthusiastic cooperation of all participants, it was an incredibly fruitful and rewarding experience.

We are delighted to report the successful conclusion of the event, and we would like to share the vision behind this workshop along with highlights from those two days.

💡 From "Being Taught" to "Learning Together"

Breaking away from the rigid framework of traditional workshops, our goal was to create a space where everyone could enjoy communicating on equal footing and learn from one another.

The true charm of marching lies not just in showing off technical skills, but in connecting with one another and elevating those connections into a performance. Especially in recent years, as band sizes tend to shrink, building dynamic connections that transcend the boundaries of individual teams is more important than ever.

💡 Prioritizing Communication from the Planning Stage

Using social media and communication tools, we kicked off the interactions well before the event itself, making the preparation process fun and engaging for everyone.

💡 Players as Leaders: Flipping the Role in the Workshop

For this event, we tried a new format: everyone from elementary school students to general community bands, as well as individual instructors, gathered flatly as equals to connect through the fundamentals of marching. It was remarkable to see how the leadership of the older players naturally inspired the elementary and junior high school students to take initiative and lead the way.

💡 Instructors and Staff (Parents) Joining the Circle

While observing the practice sessions, aspiring instructors and those facing day-to-day challenges in their own bands brought their questions to the table. Through active discussions, they exchanged a wide range of ideas. The focus wasn't on finding a single "correct answer," but rather on gathering fresh ideas and inspiration.

We have successfully taken this exciting first step, and we look forward to building on this momentum to make this a continuous, annual event.
